Software structure
WorkRooms depends on three main Microsoft products:
- Windows 2000 Server
- Exchange 2000 Server
- SQL Server 7.0
Programming of WorkRooms utilises the Application Program Interfaces (APIs) provided by Microsoft for access to the Microsoft product functions.
The WorkRooms solution itself consists of:
- Active Server Pages (ASP)
- User interface to the WorkRooms application functions
- Compiled programs (written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0, Microsoft Visual Java++ 6.0 and Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0) and Microsoft SQL Stored Procedures, which define and control access to database tables.
User security is managed through the API to Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Active Directory. Control of access to folders and files is managed through the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server APIs.
Email, calendar and appointment functions are also managed through the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server APIs.
Creation of documents in a workroom depends on Microsoft Office APIs.
Security
Users will access WorkRooms via their own network, if it is installed locally, or over the Internet. Internet access requires that the user enter their username and password to access WorkRooms.
Secure access over the Internet depends on Microsoft Virtual Private Networking (VPN). A VPN connection is required for online work with files stored in a workroom, because it enables the data to be transferred between the client and server in a format that Microsoft Office can handle.
